It's tough out there for copywriters
New technologies. Economic turmoil. Tightening budgets. Skittish clients. Overcrowded markets. Undervalued creativity. Words as commodities. Autocratic algorithms. Rampant plagiarism. Billionaires bleeding the world dry.

It’s hard to know where we fit into this landscape
How do we build and shape fulfilling careers? What skills do we need to remain competitive? How do we do this while keeping our integrity intact?
*whispers: it kinda feels like an industry in crisis*
We're feeling it. And if you’re here, you're probably feeling it too. Which is why we're building a community learning platform to help copywriters navigate and thrive in our brave new world – away from the overwhelming clamour of mainstream social media.
A safe space for considered and considerate discussion. Where those doing the thing – not just talking about doing the thing – can learn from each other. Where we can respectfully push one another to improve our craft.
A place where human-first creativity is valued. Where good writing is championed. Where better is more important than faster or cheaper.
A place where we can quietly plot to overthrow our algorithmic overlords – but we’ll keep that last bit to ourselves.
If you’re a copywriter feeling lost, overwhelmed and in need of connection: this community was made for you.

About Felicity
Hi, I'm Felicity, community leader and creator of WATA 👋
I've been a copywriter for the best part of a decade. When I returned to work after maternity leave in October 2024, I felt lost and overwhelmed by the rapid changes and market shifts that had happened in my absence.
I couldn’t see where I fit in.
Did clients still need what I offered? Were my skills still relevant? Should I quit and retrain in something tangible, like gardening? (Just kidding, my knees are too f*cked for that 😝)
“Adapt or die” was the LinkedIn battle cry.
Intellectually, I knew this was true (and you probably do too). Running a copywriting business for eight years had been a constant exercise in adaptation. But I couldn’t see what this next shift should look like.
I’m naturally skeptical and wary of jumping on bandwagons — because we all know THAT isn’t the key to a sustainable career or business (*cough* NFTs *cough*). I also have concerns about stuff like ethics and protecting the environment.
I searched for a space to have thoughtful, nuanced conversations about the state of things with like-minded copywriters. A place to explore building a fulfilling career amid disruption, stay competitive and discuss how to do it with integrity.
I couldn’t find it — so I built it (with a baby in tow, 2024 was tiring 🫠).
If you’ve been nodding along and feel the same as me, I’d love to welcome you to the community.
